You know those pesky relatives who sometimes show up on short notice that stay a little too long? I had a couple of those bust into my chemo party last month!
Don't get me wrong, my actual relatives have been extremely considerate and their visits these past couple of weeks have been very welcome and uplifting.
I'm talking about those shoe-string relatives, namely Aunt Flo and Uncle Prickly!
Now if you're a fella reading along, be warned, I've got some serious GIRL TALK coming your way! You might want to skip this post!
First of all, I was expecting Aunt Flo to visit me during my trip to Seattle for my lumpectomy surgery! I had everything I needed to deal with my familiar monthly friend. But she ended up arriving a week late, after I was home recuperating, which of course was better for me. However, I was expecting her next visit to come 4 weeks later, as usual, and she surprised me 3 weeks later instead. Just in time for my port-a-cath procedure (you now how I felt about that!) and my first chemotherapy appointment. So inconsiderate! As you can imagine, I was in a pretty bad mood over that (honestly, I think it's bad enough that I'm still dealing with this monthly annoyance along with the cancer stuff, but what can you do?!)!!!
After my first chemotherapy treatment, I spent a lot of the first 4 days sleeping in the afternoons, laying on the couch watching TV, and generally being unproductive. The next 3 days after that I was dealing with chills, headaches, fuzzy brain, and shortness of breath. I don't think I had looked in a mirror for a week by the time I noticed the arrival of dear Uncle Prickly! You see, I have a couple of moles on my face and I need to trim the hairs growing out about every other day. This is usually no problem for me, just a quick part of my daily routine. Imagine my horror to notice the long hairs growing from my face when I finally started to take care of my appearance again! Uncle Prickly! You're so quiet and invasive!!
TRUTH: Life's little annoyances can seem more annoying when we're dealing with big stuff. But it helps to be able to laugh at the situation if you can!
Some of the things I've read in cancer articles and books make me think I won't have to be worrying about dear old Aunt Flo or Uncle Prickly much longer as the chemo effects start to take place. Will I be missing their untimely visits? I don't think so!
Thanks for sharing a laugh with me!
Do you have any funny situations you're dealing with as a result of your chemotherapy treatment?
Speak your truth here - we've gotta be able to laugh through this too!
